Montañas en Resistencia (Mountains in Resistance)

A series of lectures and online conversations, exploring the possibilities and intersections between art, activism and academic research, to recognize mountains as living bodies. The series is developed in chapters that go from the experience of the body and the social and political contexts of resistance, to a conceptualization of the possibility of future life around and together with mountains; proposing connections of care between human bodies, mountains, glaciers and rock formations.

Initiated by Amanda Piña, coordinated by Alessandro Questa and developed within the framework of THIRDTalks. Realized in collaboration with Cecilia Vallejos, Victoria Uranga and Miguel A López.

On Grief and Death

THIRD researchers explore this theme in a variety of modalities and capacities. Special attention is given to ritual and embodied practices sensitive to grieving, to transitioning, and to storytelling.

On Writing

This series of conversations explores writing praxes in the expanded field of artistic research. Poets, scholars and transdisciplinary artists share their insights on the making of writing and how they make this immanent to their various art projects.

Ilse van Rijn interviews Pulitizer Prize winning poet Anne Boyer during an online gathering of THIRD Cohort 2.

Siegmar Zacharias introduces the cohort to poet CAConrad and their practice as a prelude to a writing workshop.

Research Experiments

Publishing and/as Artistic Practice

In January 2022 THIRD organized the Mini Fieldings Forum, an online programme around their recently published book on artistic research Fieldings – Propositions for 3rd Cycle Research in the Performing Arts. We discussed questions and shared examples of publishing artistic practices and publishing as an artistic practice in a round table conversation. We asked our guests Koleka Putuma, Erin Manning and Florian Dombois to reflect on the potential of publishing and/as artistic practice in a THIRDtalk.

Initiated by DAS Graduate School, the 3rd cycle research group THIRD aims to bridge the gap between master and 3rd cycle education. It's a unique dedicated support structure designed as a three-year trajectory for small-scale learning cohorts of seven fellows each year. The aim of THIRD is to prepare, coach and facilitate individual artists in articulating a long-term research project for enrolment in a PhD, 3rd cycle or research fellowship programme. Participants from different backgrounds are offered the opportunity to explore research together in intensive seminars, and experience a peer-to-peer culture and a collaborative ecology of practices, perspectives and approaches to artistic research. More about THIRD.

THIRD is a programme of DAS Research situated in DAS Graduate School. Established by the Academy of Theatre and Dance, a faculty of the Amsterdam University of the Arts.
